👩🌾Around the Farm This Week👩🌾
👈This is the furthest along the peppers have ever been at this time of year! They are looking great for a first harvest in about a month!
👉The RFD CSA drop was INSANE! So many people, so much food! Yikes, that was a lot of fun and we can't wait to do it again this week!
👈The white blanched stem on the leeks this week are UNBELIEVABLE! Growing leeks like this is very difficult to do, but we knocked it out of the park this time!
👉The new cold-room is getting poured and is about half-way done! I am getting really excited about this because the other cold room is getting way over-crowded and Tess, our CSA manager will be so relieved when the new one is ready! This will also help us store more crops in the Fall and Winter seasons!
👈We had another great storytime this week! This week we learned all about beans! We did the storytime in the Kid's Garden right next to the bean tipi and then we planted some beans and the kids took them home - such fun!
👉The nursery got a nice facelift this week too! Not only did we get a fancy new door, but we also had a nice sidewalk poured for a more finished look and also so we can place things on display. Looking good!

How to Test Your Soil - The Easy Way!
There are multiple ways and reasons to test your soil:
· Testing to determine soil type.
· Testing to determine moisture levels.
· Testing to determine Co2 Levels.
· Testing to determine nutrient levels.
· Testing to determine soil PH level.
· And more…
Here are TWO easy ways to test your soil type:
1. The Squeeze Test: Simply grab a handful of moist (not wet - if water seeps out, it's too wet) soil and squeeze it in your hand. If it holds it's shape and then falls apart easily, you have loamy soil. If it holds it shape and can be formed into a ball, you have clay soil. If it doesn’t hold it’s shape you have sandy soil.
2. The Water Test: 1. Take a jar and fill it with 1/3 soil. 2. Fill the rest of the jar with water and one tablespoon of liquid dish soap. 3. Shake thoroughly. 4. Allow the jar to sit for 24 hours.
o Sandy: Clear water and settled soil at the bottom.
o Loam: Water is a little murky with bits floating in it.
o Clay: The water is very murky.
o Organic matter: The organic matter will be the floating debris at the top of the jar – an important indicator! Healthy soil should have approximately 4-12% organic matter.
So, which soil did YOU have?
· Full Composition Analysis can be obtain by sending your soil into a test lab. Suggested test laboratory is Miwest Labs in Nebraska. This is the lab we have always used for everything from manure testing to water and soil testing etc. www.midwestlabs.com

Weekly Farmer's Market Update
Ahavah Farmer's Market is Every Friday from 9a - 12p
We had another great market this week...
This week we had the bounce-house out for the kids, we also had a splash pad to keep everyone cool, we had live music, of course our
playground was packed and we had some new vendors!
We also had story time with Ms. Tracy! It's always one of our absolute favorite activities on the farm. Tracy engages the kids with
3 to 4 stories and an activity. This week she read about beans, in the bean garden and then they planted beans to take home. It's always great time for kids!

📢DID YOU KNOW? 📢
Power Microgreens!
Did you know that microgreens have been found to be up to 40× more nutritious than mature-leaf vegetables? For instance, one ounce of our microgreen mix is nearly nutritionally equivalent to 3lbs of broccoli!
Crazy, I know. But that's not the ONLY thing that microgreens are good for. Microgreens taste incredible, and there's a reason for that too - the nutrition! Did you know that the higher the nutritional content of a vegetable, the higher the sugar content and therefore the greater the flavor also? Of course you knew this because you read all the "Did-You-Know" sections and you've learned this in-depth already😉! You should also know this, like, totally automatically, because the flavor of Ahavah Farm veggies tastes so great - duh, that's why our carrots are so yummy!! It's because they have higher nutrition and thus have a higher sugar content!
So back to the amazing microgreens...
As a CSA member, you will have the opportunity to experience almost every microgreen we grow as we try to grow all varieties and provide them every week as part of the Market-Style membership. You'll notice that our microgreens last 2x to 3x longer than the ones you buy in the store. That's because they are super-fresh which means that their nutritional content is even higher. However, they won't last as long as mature vegetables. Eat them quick, within 3 days of receiving them to get the best benefit.
As a tip: As a CSA member, your microgreen servings are 2x what they are in the store, they are fresher and better than any other microgreens you will find - we guarantee it. the value of each "serving" is anywhere from $7 to $13, so they shouldn't be missed at the CSA pickups - we HIGHLY recommend them as a big benefit of being an Ahavah Farm CSA member, as it's something you won't find in many other CSA's across the country.
Enjoy them all: Sunflower, Pea, Radish, Broccoli, Barley Grass, Kohlrabi, Cabbage and a few others like basil and dill, cilantro and kale.

AHAVAH COMMUNITY INITIATIVE BRING-A-BUCK!
"Hi, nice to see you! Did you bring your buck today!?"
These are the words you should hear every week when you show up at the CSA locations to get your veggies.
That's because, supporting families in need through ACI, is the MOST IMPORTANT and BEST part of being a CSA member with Ahavah Farm! Don't say your $1 isn't important! IT IS!! The Bring-A-Buck program is how ACI has sustained its food donations, so we thank you members! - EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!

Meet YOUR Community!
Interview #10 With Rabbi Eddie Shapiro
Here is a special treat, an interview with one of my favorite people in the world, and one of the farm's as well, Rabbi Eddie Shapiro. Rabbi has been with us since the beginning of this farm, he's part of the mission of growing the food, but more importantly, he is a blessing to our family and our farm staff. If the farm had a "Rabbi," he'd be it! Enjoy the interview and say hi to Rabbi the next time you see him hanging around the farm or up in Denver at the JCC CSA pickup!

This Week's Harvest
As always, nothing is guaranteed. These are the items that are "in season" and are anticipated to be ready this week (which may or may not be available at the CSA).
Small = 4-6 items per week
Medium = 7-9 items per week
Large = 10-12 items per week
Redbor Kale and Darkibor Kale - Some of the most amazing kale you have ever seen or tasted! Taste is NOTHING like in the store - those that know, know! Try some this week, massage is real good, follow one of THESE recipes and let your tastebuds have a party!
Scallions - Who doesn't love scallions!? Did you know that if you leave the roots on and stick it in a glass of water the scallions will re-grow for a second cut!? It's true - try it!
Leeks - Did you know that the entire leek plant is edible? yup, and delicious too! The best part, however, is the blanched stem. These leeks have the longest blanched stem due to the way we grow them - this makes them REALLY special leeks, and we are SUPER excited about them! Here's 18 recipes for leeks!
Celeriac Greens - Similar to celery, but more bitter. Celeriac is great in stews and in cooked dishes or other places where you would like to substitute celery.
Chives - The wonderful chive. You can't go wrong here. they are a cross between onions and garlic and are excellent on just about everything!
Swiss Chard - One of my absolute favorite greens to saute' and wilt deeply. I love garlic, oil and salt and taking this amazingness and adding it to a bed of rice or quinoa and adding in different vegetables, some tofu (or meat) and then we love an asian peanut-based dressing and it's to die for.
Salad Mix lettuce- A beautiful and soft/fluffy salad mix (with some arugula and flowers mixed in - YUM!). perfect for a salad base or even a bed of rice etc.
Cucumbers - Yep, they are here! They are starting to come in quickly, but for this week, they are limited. These, along with tomatoes and squash will be coming soon!
Broccoli Greens - OH MY! We absolutely LOVE broccoli greens! Ever had collards? These are better! Cooked them and serve them the same way and you will be in heaven! Never heard of broccoli greens? That's ok, check out this cool article about why these greens are so important and ideas on how to use them.
Plants - There will be plenty of plants to choose as an item this week, even some garden varieties. Enjoy!
Living Herbs - We have basil, chamomile, mint and a lot more!
Red Russian Kale - Baby kale is always so tender! Sauté' it, eat it raw, add it to stews...there so much to do. Here are some ideas.
Dill - An amazing aromatic herb that will remind you of pickles every time! but, did you know that dill is used in a lot of recipes? Check it out here.
Garlic - Our garlic is harvested and ready! We are so excited for garlic season, but unfortunately, much of our garlic turned out smaller than we had hoped due to an "oopsie" while growing. BUT, it's still absolutely delicious garlic (the largest ones we will keep for seed come Fall)!
Dried Herbs - Basil, dill, mint and fennel (our herb room smells like heaven!😇).
Radish Microgreens - Next to the barley grass and the sunshoots, radish microgreens are some of the most nutritiously-dense items we grow on the farm and not only that, but during our annual survey last year, they ranked as the #1 most requested and love item we grow! They have a fantastic bite to them, last considerably long in the refrigerator and are beautiful in appearance.
Kohlrabi Greens - Stalk and all, these amazing greens are delicious! I love to eat them similar to collards, or broccoli greens, sautéed in butter with some garlic and salt, but they have a unique flavor that is very nice! Absolutely delicious greens!
Pea Shoots - One of the most desired and sought after items we provide are these pea shoots! Quite literally the best you added to any dish or salad. Our favorite way is to add them to stews and soups. A perfect topper too! Here are four fun ways to use Pea Shoots: http://blog.bostonorganics.com/4-fun-ways-to-use-pea-shoots
Beets - Absolutely stunning beets are coming this week! we have two kinds: Boldor (golden) and red baby beets. Both are delicious, but they have unique flavors. here are some recipes for GOLDEN BEETS. Here are some for RED BEETS.
Broccoli Microgreens - Last week we told you that Radish Microgreens were the #1 most loved item we grow, well, these microgreens weren't on the list then! I have a sneaking suspicion that these microgreens are the real winners!
Sunshoots - Our sunshoots are certainly some of the nicest, most high-quality sunshoots you will ever find (that actually goes for all our microgreens). They are one of the most beloved items we grow as well and a regular staple to our CSA. Here are some ideas to use your sunnies this week: https://www.martinsgardenacf.com/sunflower-shoots-recipes
That's it for this week! We love you to pieces, are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you and we are blessed to the core to be YOUR farmers!! ❤️
-Yosef, Havah, Asher, Aiden, Israel, Eliana, Ovadya, Elisheva, Nedira and of course our amazing team: Josh, Tess, Lorin, Evan, Katie, Holly, Casey, Jessie, Joe and Charles! ❤️
