Newsletter for Week 11 of Spring CSA 2022

Hello FaRmily! YIKES! It's hail season again and now and again it gets SCARY (see below for this week's article with video of todays storm!) We watched this intense storm roll in last night and it dropped some hail and some LARGE hail also...but, it didn't last long so there was not any damage (but we weren't so lucky today - see below). Well, it is what it is and that's farming in Colorado! Thankfully this is not our first rodeo, so we have lot's of preventative measures...but I will tell you, it's not fun!

All in all, the farm (besides the hailed squash) are looking great! We are catching up from the snowstorms and the rough Spring, the weeds are still incredibly frustrating (WE NEED HELP!), but most of the planting for the Summer is in already. The only really big project we have left for Summer planting is the beans (which we are late on!). So, now we can focus on Fall! Amazing how fast time flies, isn't it!?

We also have another fantastic CSA for you this week and the harvest list is below. There are a lot of items, announcements and more in this week's newsletter, some are very important and some are just for fun. Enjoy the newsletter this week!

ONLY 1 WEEK LEFT FOR SPRING CSA!

Summer Season starts June 23rd and 24th (pre-season meeting is June 20th@6pm)

New Section! - 👩‍🌾Around the Farm👩‍🌾

👈It was a chilly market, but it was still a ton of fun! Here is Rachel, from The Sourdough Bouloungerie trying to stay warm by her amazing loaves of bread!

👉We have BEAUTIFUL radishes for you this week!

👈As always, Ms. Lorin's Full-Season Garden Class was off-the-hook and LOADED with awesome information!

👉The alpacas came out to say hi at this week's Farmer's Market at the Farm. We have things like this happening every week - so there's always something fun and new!

👈Asher's first broadfork was sold to Alan - one of our most awesome CSA members! Alan loved the new tool and Asher was very excited! Want one? E-mail Asher directly at theechooftheanvil@gmail.com - he also takes custom blacksmithing orders of all kinds!

👉It's that time of year again! Time to put on the shade cloth on all the houses so the little darling plants can enjoy their perfect little lives under the shade and out of the harsh elements. Must be nice 😉#highmaintenance 😄

👇Oh, this is so cute! Come to the Farmer's Market to see our new Children's Garden! We even have a bean tipi which will be a lot of fun to go in when the beans grow up!

👇Havah had a lot of fun planting with all the kiddos at the market this week!🥰

👉 A brand-new cold-room is going in! This will be SOOOOO helpful, especially when the pumpkins and winter squash and onions all get harvested and dried! We will have plenty of space for them in our new 10'x30'x8' cement, underground cold room!

☝We have new paths on the farm! This will allow us to tie the farm together from one side of the other and be able to wheel carts and heavy items from one place to the next. it will also tie in the parking to the office and make the whole farm, Nursery and ACI a more efficient place to operate...of course, I had to take a few minutes to sit with Ovi and watch all the workers and big trucks!🥰

📢DID YOU KNOW? 📢

"Hail or No Hail, We are Here Because of You!"
- By Yosef Camire

Hmm, what do I write about today? Oh, I know! It just hit me on the head 😄!...

I don't know why I am so bullheaded, but I am! It's what makes me successful, I guess. This determined, unrelenting, stubborn man will not let mother-nature win!...or something like that😄. Well, it's true that we decided to farm in one of the most difficult locations in the country. We have a growing season almost as short as Alaska, we experience more hail in Colorado than any other place in the world...and I think that goes for lightning strikes too!? The wind on these plains is simply absurd. We regularly hit 50 mph and we view it as "a breeze" and don't get me started on the dramatics - one day it's 100 degrees and the next there is a frost!...No...seriously. In addition to all of this, it's too sunny! Ya, that's a real thing, and here on the plains of Colorado at 6500ft, that sun is hotter than Gehinom, and I mean it - and the plants hate it! Ever seen a well-watered squash plant burn, I mean simply burn up and die right there in the ground? I have...while the drip irrigation is still running😮!

So, it's hard to grow here, really, anyone who has tried knows our struggles. It's almost unbearable, and since we have been here we have seen WAY TOO MANY farms come and go. This is why we have our high-tunnels and our shade/hail structures, because without them, we wouldn't be able to grow anything! This is also why we have a premium on our veggies. Not only are they the best tasting, purest and most ecologically-supportive, but they are LOCAL...as in, COLORADO LOCO - ahem, I mean LOCAL. 😄 Yes, you do have to be a little loco, crazy, to want to farm in this place, but our roots are deep now, our children are flourishing here and our community is loving and generous and kind. What else can you ask for? You can't have it all, and what we have is worth a lot more than the sacrifice of some hail🥰.

Well, at least I would like to say that all the time, but sometimes it does get to us and it gets to us hard. We are talking about our incomes, our livelihoods and the livelihoods of all our employees, so it is incumbent upon us to not only have a lot of backups, protections and redundancies, but it's also vital to have a supportive community when hard times come. For that, we thank you and we love you back! The REAL, deep down truth, is that we have thought about quitting many times due to the struggles out here, but every time we do, I promise you with all of my heart, we think of all of you and YOU keep us here. We know our community - you are loving, you are generous, you are good and you are kind and you are what keeps us doing what we do - hail, or no hail.

👇This is what came JUST NOW (and hit me on the head!😉), as I was wondering what the heck to write about this week! 🤣Well, the weather is out of our control and we do the best we can to prepare and weather it, like with our hail structure below, but not everything can be perfect, as you can see from our hurting squash.😭

👈Our squash was not so happy about this hail storm, but you know what? It looks like there are plenty that survived. Sure, we lost plenty, but it's not a total loss. Also, we kind of anticipated this, and so instead of planting the squash in 3 to 4 foot spacing, we did it in 2 foot spacing knowing that we could lose at least half...looks about right, I'd say.

👉Poor little squash plant, you lived a good life. Well, maybe not a great life...but when you were in the nursery you sure were happy. I am sorry I let you out into the world...it's a harsh place.

This Week's Harvest

As always, nothing is guaranteed. These are the items that are "in season" and are anticipated to be ready this week (which may or may not be available at the CSA).

  • Small = 4-6 items per week

  • Medium = 7-9 items per week

  • Large = 10-12 items per week

  1. Garlic Scapes - Scapes are here, scapes are here!!!!!! A once a year treat that is beloved by EVERYONE! Check out some awesome preparation tips.

  2. Radishes - Beautiful red radishes this week. Not too spicy with a bit of sweetness. Roasted radishes are my absolute favorite!

  3. Redbor Kale and Darkibor Kale - Some of the most amazing kale you have ever seen or tasted! Taste is NOTHING like in the store - those that know, know! Try some this week, massage is real good, follow one of THESE recipes and let your tastebuds have a party!

  4. Scallions - Who doesn't love scallions!? Did you know that if you leave the roots on and stick it in a glass of water the scallions will re-grow for a second cut!? It's true - try it!

  5. Hakurei Sweet Turnips - The absolute best turnips on the planet - they are SO sweet and delicious, kids eat them like apples and they are extraordinarily versatile. Definitely a CSA staple and favorite for so many!

  6. Red Russian Kale - oh we love this kale, as it is perfect for braising or putting in a stew. We also love it for salads as a more tender alternative to the mature kale. YUM!

  7. Chives - Oh, chives are the best! if you cross garlic and onions...this is the magic you get!

  8. Cilantro - who doesn't like cilantro!? Actually, did you know that if ciantro tastes like "soap" you aren't alone? That's right, there is actually a percentage of people that have a genetic disposition to taste soap when eating cilantro! Don't believe me? Check this out here.

  9. Swiss Chard - One of my absolute favorite greens to saute' and wilt deeply. I love garlic, oil and salt and taking this amazingness and adding it to a bed of rice or quinoa and adding in different vegetables, some tofu (or meat) and then we love an asian peanut-based dressing and it's to die for.

  10. Red Splendor Mustard - Simply the most amazing mustard on the planet! Beautiful in appearance, smooth in taste, this mustard is ready for everyone - raw, saute'd, roasted or added to a stew are some awesome ideas: our favorite way is in a fritatta! OH MY! Keep in mind that mustard greens taste totally different after cooked. Check out this link for 10 recipe ideas. ⭐All members will receive 2 bunches with their CSA this week, as part of their share.

  11. Mint - A specialty herb that will be coming every few weeks throughout the summer. Never used mint? Oh, you are in for an AMAZING treat! there are so many ways to use mint, here is a list of 63 recipes for you!

  12. Salad Mix lettuce- A beautiful and soft/fluffy salad mix (with some arugula and flowers mixed in - YUM!). perfect for a salad base or even a bed of rice etc.

  13. Plants - There will be plenty of plants to choose as an item this week, even some garden varieties. Enjoy!

  14. Arugula - Wonderful baby arugula is similar to mustard with a bite, but a change in flavor after cooking. Very versatile and a specialty green with a high demand. Here is an article with 30 ways to serve arugula.

  15. Living Herbs - We have basil, chamomile, mint and a lot more!

  16. Dried Herbs - Basil, dill, mint and fennel (our herb room smells like heaven!😇).

  17. Radish Microgreens - Next to the barley grass and the sunshoots, radish microgreens are some of the most nutritiously-dense items we grow on the farm and not only that, but during our annual survey last year, they ranked as the #1 most requested and love item we grow! They have a fantastic bite to them, last considerably long in the refrigerator and are beautiful in appearance.

  18. Pea Shoots - One of the most desired and sought after items we provide are these pea shoots! Quite literally the best you added to any dish or salad. Our favorite way is to add them to stews and soups. A perfect topper too! Here are four fun ways to use Pea Shoots: http://blog.bostonorganics.com/4-fun-ways-to-use-pea-shoots

  19. Broccoli Microgreens - Last week we told you that Radish Microgreens were the #1 most loved item we grow, well, these microgreens weren't on the list then! I have a sneaking suspicion that these microgreens are the real winners!

  20. Sunshoots - Our sunshoots are certainly some of the nicest, most high-quality sunshoots you will ever find (that actually goes for all our microgreens). They are one of the most beloved items we grow as well and a regular staple to our CSA. Here are some ideas to use your sunnies this week: https://www.martinsgardenacf.com/sunflower-shoots-recipes

That's it for this week! We love you to pieces, are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you and we are blessed to the core to be YOUR farmers!!
