Good Morning Members! ๐Ÿ’—โ˜บ๏ธ

I hope this finds you feeling sun-shiny๐ŸŒž on this blah, cold and snowy day๐ŸŒจ๏ธ! Well, no matter what happens, we know that we will always be smiling and we hope you are smiling with us!

Well, this week hasn't been that good to us, and to be honest neither have the last few. The harvests have been extraordinarily small. Everything from turnips to lettuce to spinach and everything in between is harvesting short and it is frustrating us immensely! What I mean is that since it is so cold the veggies aren't bulking up like they are supposed to, so when we go to harvest the crop, it's turning out to be a lot smaller than is anticipated. What we have found is that we are just about 10 days to 2 weeks early and that's causing a routing of our crops (since we have to harvest extra). True, it's been a great season thus far. however, I was hoping that this first

week of March would provide a larger abundance, but sadly it hasn't. Sometimes it just doesn't matter how perfectly weeded, seeded, planted and prepared your farm is, if the weather doesn't cooperate, well, that's just what it is and there sometimes isn't anything you can do about it! We promise to give you an abundance if we have it, as for this week the shares will be very small and there won't be much at the farmer's market for extras this week! Sorry everyone! Hopefully the weather will turn around soon and we will have a balmy March!

This Week's Harvest

As always, nothing is guaranteed. These are the items that are "in season" and are anticipated to be ready this week (which may or may not be available at the CSA).

  • Small = 4-6 items per week ($25/wk)

  • Medium = 7-9 items per week ($35/wk)

  • Large = 10-12 items per week ($45/wk)

  1. Lettuce - Beautiful baby lettuce. We have baby romaine (rouge d'hiver) and a salad mix which consists of a mixture of 5 varieties. Great for everything from salads to sandwhiches!

  2. Garlic Greens - Our absolute favorite and an absolute favorite of our CSA! We use these just like you would scallions and we include them in EVERYTHING! We put them on our salads, on our sandwiches, on our soups, in our homemade dressings, in our rice on our potatoes...should I continue!? Not only are these absolutely to die for, but you won't get them ANYWHERE ELSE! ๐Ÿ˜‹

  3. Cilantro - There is not much that can say SPRING IS HERE better than cilantro! The aroma of this beautiful and flavorful green is amazing! Our hands smell like cilantro for an entire day after harvest! Learn more about this amazing green HERE.

  4. Turnips & Beautiful Turnip Greens - the turnips were a little small this week, but that just means that they are sweeter! But the greens...those greens are so beautiful and so tasty! Buttery and LOADED with nutrition, we love to sautรฉ these amazing greens and eat them alone with some garlic and onion or add them to eggs or a stew. The flavor isn't just amazing, the calcium bioavailability is beyond any other food on earth๐Ÿ˜ฒ!

  5. Barley Wheat Grass - Everyone gets barley grass this week! It's something we want to mix in a handful of times per year. Many of our members absolutely love our barley grass and use it religiously. We hope you take the time to learn and enjoy this most amazingly nutritious green! More nutritious than wheat grass and less bitter, barley grass is used mostly for juicing. However, I, Yosef (and many of our team members) love to use it as an energy and nutritioun

  6. Garlic - amazing hardneck, stored and cured from Fall. Only a limited supply, this is the last of it!

  7. Onions - this is the last of the onions!

  8. Baby Red Russian Kale - The most beautiful and tender kale we grow. Sweet and ready to wilt and add to nearly any dish or to be eaten raw in a salad. Delicious!

  9. Spinach - There is little doubt in our members' minds that this spinach is the best they've ever had! The sad part is that it grows slowly and isn't regenerating quick enough to give us an abundance. But it's coming...oh, it's coming! Enjoy this spinach raw before deciding to cook it...it's just that good! Ps. if you look closely at the leaves you'll see the beautiful sugar crystals!

  10. Dried Herbs - Basil, dill, mint and fennel (our herb room smells like heaven!๐Ÿ˜‡).

  11. Radish Microgreens - Next to the barley grass and the sunshoots, radish microgreens are some of the most nutritiously-dense items we grow on the farm and not only that, but during our annual survey last year, they ranked as the #1 most requested and love item we grow! They have a fantastic bite to them, last considerably long in the refrigerator and are beautiful in appearance.

  12. Pea Shoots - One of the most desired and sought after items we provide are these pea shoots! Quite literally the best you added to any dish or salad. Our favorite way is to add them to stews and soups. A perfect topper too! Here are four fun ways to use Pea Shoots: http://blog.bostonorganics.com/4-fun-ways-to-use-pea-shoots

  13. Broccoli Microgreens - Last week we told you that Radish Microgreens were the #1 most loved item we grow, well, these microgreens weren't on the list then! I have a sneaking suspicion that these microgreens are the real winners!

  14. Sunshoots - Our sunshoots are certainly some of the nicest, most high-quality sunshoots you will ever find (that actually goes for all our microgreens). They are one of the most beloved items we grow as well and a regular staple to our CSA. Here are some ideas to use your sunnies this week: https://www.martinsgardenacf.com/sunflower-shoots-recipes

  15. Living Herbs - We have an abundance of beautiful living herbs for you. Choose from cilantro, oregano, parsley and more. Each plant counts as one serving.

What to expect for next week's harvest:

I believe next week's CSA harvest is going to be on the smaller side again. However, it shouldn't be any less beautiful! Expect lettuce, spinach, arugula, fennel, radishes, turnips and more. It should be a beautiful week, though on the smaller side. The following three weeks after that should see a larger bounty, as long as the weather holds out!

That's it for this week! We love you to pieces, are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you and we are blessed to the core to be YOUR farmers!!
