New Section! - 👩🌾Around the Farm👩🌾
👈Tomato planting happened on Sunday during our volunteer day. It was so much fun to see everyone (30 people came out!!) and we were so blessed that not only did the tomatoes get planted, but so many other projects were worked on and so much help was given. Thank you to everyone who gave us their precious time! We love you and are grateful!
👉The first farmer's market happened on Friday (and will be every Friday from 9a to 12p - come out!). It was such a success and such a blast. As the season progresses, so will the vendors and of course classes and events will always be a reason to come!
👈Lorin cut the ribbon on the grand opening of the Nursery and Garden Center! We are so proud of Lorin and how hard she has worked. She continues to be a blessing to all of us!
👉The Nursery & Garden Center had such an incredibly successful first week and we sold about 1,000 plants in the first week! Still plenty of plants available and we are open Monday - Friday 9am to 3pm!
👈The Sandbox school bus with slide and working doors was SOOO much fun to build and what a fun time it was for all the kiddos! They went down the slide a few hundred times, were able to open and close the doors and pretend to drive, all while the parents got to shop, hang out and enjoy their snacks under the shade of the tent.
👉The whole family gets involved in nearly every project. I love this job...and I absolutely love this woman🥰!

📢DID YOU KNOW? 📢
"Here's One Vital, and Unrecognized Reason Why Local is Always Better"
- By Yosef Camire
One of the most important benefits of being a CSA member is knowing that your food is harvested and delivered fresh (within mere days). Not only are the vegetables grown regeneratively, chemical-free etc. and with as much nutrient-density as possible, but by being harvested and delivered fresh, you know that your nutrients are locked-in and bio-available for your body to process.
This freshly-harvested benefit is something that may be much more important than you, or most, realize. Not only does supporting local reduce carbon emissions, have a more positive impact on the environment, last longer, taste better and support your local community and economy, but there is a much much more important reason to support local and eat fresh that trumps them all. This important aspect regarding your produce being harvested and delivered fresh, is an aspect that goes WAY beyond the "Organic" label and is a benefit that can only be applied to "local" produce. Let me explain:
Did you know that the average produce travels over 2,000 miles before it gets to your local store!? After produce is harvested it has to go through several stages and delivery points before making it to your local store. First is the harvest and immediately following is the processing stages (1-2 days). Next, the produce will typically ship out on a truck on day 2 or 3. After travelling an average of 2,000 miles (2-3 days) it goes to a distribution center (now on day 6 or 7 - but could be up several weeks!) and then it finally makes it to your local grocery store by day 8 or 9 on average. Now that the vegetables are at your grocery store on day 8, they don't get put out, usually, until 1 - 2 days later. Therefore, the average vegetables in the grocery store are approximately 9-10 days old by the time it can be purchased by you. However, in addition to this, there is typically a 3 to 5 day rotation of vegetables (since trucks don't come every day), which means that the head of lettuce you just purchased is typically 9 days to 14 days old or older! No wonder your CSA vegetables last so much longer and taste so much fresher 😄!
So, why is this storage and delivery-time so important aside from taste and the length of time it will last on your shelf? The most important reason for supporting and buying and eating local is due to the nutrient-degradation in the produce by the time it hits your plates. As Jolene Hanson summarizes it:
...commercial fruits and vegetables...can be in transit for several weeks before it hits store shelves. Add one to three days before it's purchased, plus several days in your refrigerator after that, and the end product is no match for nutrient-rich crops from your own back yard.
How much nutrient-degradation takes place during this travel time and does it REALLY affect your health? The answer is, a lot - on both counts. See, it's not just what is NOT put into growing the crops that matters (like chemicals etc.), it's also about what's IN the produce (nutrient density) that really matters. Think about it: Eating a piece of "Organic" cardboard may not have harsh chemicals, but it sure doesn't have nutrients either, and eating that cardboard, though it may not kill you, it won't help you fight disease or make you any healthier either! Diane Barret of UC Davis wrote a very informative article which is a MUST-READ for all members! The research in her article proves that all vegetables lose a staggering amount of nutrients via the distribution process - even when refrigerated! Diane shows that some vegetables, like green-beans, can lose up to 77% of the nutrients in just a single week in the refrigerator and additionally up to 70% of remaining nutrients can be lost due to canning and processing for storage!
It's no wonder our nation and our world is so sick! Not only are most people eating chemical-laden foods, but they are also completely and utterly nutrient deficient!!! ...and this is, as you know, just one of many factors.
I hope you enjoyed this article, that you keep this in mind the next time you enjoy lettuce or kale or a carrot or a tomato from our farm and also that you remember this also at your next trip to the grocery store.

This Week's Harvest
As always, nothing is guaranteed. These are the items that are "in season" and are anticipated to be ready this week (which may or may not be available at the CSA).
Small = 4-6 items per week
Medium = 7-9 items per week
Large = 10-12 items per week
Garlic Scapes - Scapes are here, scapes are here!!!!!! A once a year treat that is beloved by EVERYONE! Check out some awesome preparation tips.
Redbor Kale and Darkibor Kale - Some of the most amazing kale you have ever seen or tasted! Taste is NOTHING like in the store - those that know, know! Try some this week, massage is real good, follow one of THESE recipes and let your tastebuds have a party!
Hakurei Sweet Turnips - The absolute best turnips on the planet - they are SO sweet and delicious, kids eat them like apples and they are extraordinarily versatile. Definitely a CSA staple and favorite for so many!
Arugula - Oh, this is such a wonderful and unique green! Delicious raw, and a completely different veggie when saute'd or added to a dish, eggs or a stew. LOVE ARUGULA!
Cilantro - who doesn't like cilantro!? Actually, did you know that if ciantro tastes like "soap" you aren't alone? That's right, there is actually a percentage of people that have a genetic disposition to taste soap when eating cilantro! Don't believe me? Check this out here.
Chives - Oh, chives are the best! if you cross garlic and onions...this is the magic you get!
Swiss Chard - One of my absolute favorite greens to saute' and wilt deeply. I love garlic, oil and salt and taking this amazingness and adding it to a bed of rice or quinoa and adding in different vegetables, some tofu (or meat) and then we love an asian peanut-based dressing and it's to die for.
Salad Mix lettuce- A beautiful and soft/fluffy salad mix (with some arugula and flowers mixed in - YUM!). perfect for a salad base or even a bed of rice etc.
Mustard Greens - There is nothing I prefer more than mustard greens with my eggs...NOTHING! And this mustard? It's the best! Delicious in so many ways, here is an article to help.
Plants - There will be plenty of plants to choose as an item this week, even some garden varieties. Enjoy!
Living Herbs - We have basil, chamomile, mint and a lot more!
Dried Herbs - Basil, dill, mint and fennel (our herb room smells like heaven!😇).
Radish Microgreens - Next to the barley grass and the sunshoots, radish microgreens are some of the most nutritiously-dense items we grow on the farm and not only that, but during our annual survey last year, they ranked as the #1 most requested and love item we grow! They have a fantastic bite to them, last considerably long in the refrigerator and are beautiful in appearance.
Pea Shoots - One of the most desired and sought after items we provide are these pea shoots! Quite literally the best you added to any dish or salad. Our favorite way is to add them to stews and soups. A perfect topper too! Here are four fun ways to use Pea Shoots: http://blog.bostonorganics.com/4-fun-ways-to-use-pea-shoots
Broccoli Microgreens - Last week we told you that Radish Microgreens were the #1 most loved item we grow, well, these microgreens weren't on the list then! I have a sneaking suspicion that these microgreens are the real winners!
Sunshoots - Our sunshoots are certainly some of the nicest, most high-quality sunshoots you will ever find (that actually goes for all our microgreens). They are one of the most beloved items we grow as well and a regular staple to our CSA. Here are some ideas to use your sunnies this week: https://www.martinsgardenacf.com/sunflower-shoots-recipes
That's it for this week! We love you to pieces, are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you and we are blessed to the core to be YOUR farmers!!
